Celebrating 150 Years of Bradford City Hall: A Remarkable Journey

In the heart of Yorkshire, where history and culture intertwine, there stands a majestic architectural masterpiece that has borne witness to a century and a half of transformation and growth. Recently, Bradford City Hall celebrated its 150th anniversary with a series of extraordinary events that transported visitors through time and allowed them to bask in its timeless grandeur.

An Unforgettable Heritage Celebration

The City Hall opened its doors to the public on September 9th, 1873. Exactly 150 years later, Bradford City Hall hosted an unforgettable Heritage Open Weekend, commemorating its rich history and celebrating its enduring legacy. The event was a resounding success, drawing visitors from near and far to partake in a celebration of culture, heritage, and community.

Reliving the Past

During the Heritage Open Weekend, visitors had the privilege of exploring the corridors of history within Bradford City Hall. The guided tours, brimming with fascinating stories and architectural marvels, allowed guests to step back in time and connect with the city’s past.

A Starring Role in Entertainment

Bradford City Hall has not only stood as a symbol of civic pride but has also played a leading role on the silver screen. Guests had the unique opportunity to discover key locations within the building that have graced popular TV shows and films, bringing cherished stories to life within its walls.

Taste of Bradford

As part of the celebration, the City Hall offered a delightful taste of Bradford. Light refreshments were available for purchase, and visitors had the chance to acquire Bradford district-related memorabilia and souvenirs from a pop-up shop hosted by the Council’s Visit Bradford team.

A Century of Jowett Car Club

In an exciting convergence of milestones, 2023 also marked 100 years of the Jowett Car Club, commemorating the local former car manufacturer Jowett Cars Ltd. Outside City Hall in Centenary Square, a splendid display of Jowett vehicles paid tribute to this century-old legacy, adding an extra layer of significance to the celebrations.

Exploring Bradford’s Historic Heart

Guests took advantage of self-guided walking tours through the city centre, discovering charming areas like Little Germany and iconic landmarks. Bradford Cathedral, with its tours and talks on Saturday, September 9th, and St George’s Hall, with guided tours by costumed characters on Sunday, September 10th, provided captivating glimpses into Bradford’s rich history.
